Visas for Athletes

The U.S. offers several visa options available for athletes, depending on their career stage and goals. The O-1 is the first choice for those who can demonstrate a record of sustained extraordinary ability, including participation in competitions at the highest level or significant recognition in their sport. The P-1 visa is created for the athletes and teams who come to the U.S. for a tournament or season and must be able to prove international renown or membership in a league. For amateur athletes, B-1 visas are available in very limited, non-competitive appearances. Professional athletes who have contractual agreements with United States organizations often obtain employment-based visas, such as the H-2B. Every type has its conditions; however, they offer a systematic road for further onshore professional development of any sports player. On the other hand, the F-1 visa category is more applicable to student-athletes.
